Me: A Selfish Work in Progress - By Andrea Connell
July 17, 2010 - I believe in being the best you can be. It isn’t always easy, sometimes we end up on a slippery slope no matter what, sometimes, one too many glasses of wine can blur the line between smart and not so smart, sometimes our deep-seated crap just gets in the way. But I try anyway. More

Meditation - A Waste of Time?
July 17, 2010 - Many would say yes, meditation takes up too much time!

Time is one of the few commodities we cannot save or store. Everyone is allotted 24 hours in a day and most of us have busy lifestyles with little time to lose. It would appear spending ½ to one hour sitting perfectly still doing nothing might easily fall into the category of a useless activity devouring precious time. More

Spiritual Awakening
July 17, 2010 - Spiritual awakening refers to soul awakening, self-development, and self-transformation, leading to a balanced and integrated life, internal joy and a more fulfilling spiritual life purpose.

Spiritual awakening is a gradual process; it is the unwritten commandment that we are unconsciously following. The only need is to become aware of it and then making little steps toward it consciously. More

Superwoman & The A-ha Moment
July 15, 2010 - “It's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.” This anonymous line from an e-mail packed with insightful gems sums up exactly what I’ve been feeling lately.

Years ago while attending a Pow Wow, I was privileged to sit in an Aboriginal healing circle. As individuals shared their grief for the benefit of healing, although I revealed nothing from my own life, I wept non-stop for over two-hours. When I asked the Shaman leading this circle the reason for my reaction she explained, “You are a channel. It’s a gift from the Great Spirit. You cry the tears others cannot.” More

Put the Olympic Discipline in Your Spirituality

John BeaudinFebruary 26, 2010 – I have never watched the Olympics very much, that’s until this year. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m a proud Canadian and we are hosting the games. It could be because our medal count is looking tastier by the day or simply, national pride aside, the spirit and discipline all these athletes display.

Last night, as I sat up in bed ready to meditate I asked myself, “What would my life look like now if that kind of Olympic discipline was a non-negotiable part of my spirituality?” Seriously, just asking the question was a life changing experience. Imagining both versions of myself juxtaposed in this new thought was humbling but none the less I was feelin' epiphanic.

Olympic Athletes can’t break appointments with themselves; procrastination is not a verb to them and most of all that “light at the end of the tunnel?” Well, lets just say, they’re holding it in their right hand. They’re feeling it baby! They believe!

I know some athletes are sometimes surprised at their medal wins, even telling the media “I thought I was going to lose,” but seriously they didn’t wake up at four in the morning everyday just to get a jump on the sun. Anyone with this kind of discipline has already won. They work tirelessly because they’ve found something they truly care about. A goal is nothing unless you really care about it. A good self help book can give you inspiration for two weeks or months until we forget about how much we care about that goal. Luckily, there is always something around the corner to make us care about it again. The Olympics has done that for me.

It’s sometimes difficult to care about certain things and hard work is not on my cuddle-list but information changes everything, it always gives us different perspectives. I may not become a gold medal meditator but I can sure as hell do much better. The winter games gave me loads of information and they made me care.

Years ago I was involved in a Medicine Buddha workshop at Vancouver’s Zuru Ling centre. Luckily, I arrived at the same time as the facilitor, the Ven. Zasep Rinpoche. As we both loaded the elevator I asked him, “Well, sharing an elevator with you must be good luck?” to which he quitely responded, “Only if you believe it is.” It was a simple answer that, like last night’s revelation, was another reminder that sometimes the steps in the formula are not that difficult to remember but the implimentation is where things get all crazy. Olympic athletes can’t compete unless they believe in themselves. That’s why they do the hard work, that’s why in a sense it’s not so hard or at least they don’t fight it.

Remember how easy it is to break appointments with your self. Need to meditate? Maybe after American idol and by then it’s easy to fall asleep on the couch.

Watching Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette win a Bronze medal last night, just a few days after her mother died, inspired me to work harder. I watched a special on American skier Lindsey Vonn who was nursing a badly bruised and swollen right shin, which almost took her out of competition but still she competed and won a gold and bronze medal. The olympics are filled with that sort of dicipline and belief. They just get it done.

I’ve been moved to tears more than a few times since the games started which reminded me that I really cared about what these athletes had accomplished. Interestingly, I was quiet surprised by this since I’d kind of given up on watching sports years ago. One of my mentors once told me, “Always stop and place the closest of attention to the happy tears in your life.” He was right. Those tears tell us what we care about. I saw great value in this kind of Olympic discipline and I want to pursue that special juice that makes a person do whatever it takes to reach a goal. So my spirituality has been given a boost. Lets’ see if I can reach the podium. – by John Beaudin
