Myth Busting the Law of Attraction - By Andrea Connell
April 20, 2010 - In the last week I’ve had several ‘spiritual’ discussions with people about money. Today, I got another one of those money fairy emails, this one with a threat of loved ones dying if I broke the chain! Seriously?! People, especially the spiritually minded ones, have so many misconceptions and issues about money, finances, wealth and abundance. So desperate are we for meaning in our lives we flock to anything that might spiritually explain our place and worth in the universal scheme of things. Add to that an unquenchable thirst for stuff and material wealth (oh just admit it…you have it too!) and you end up with a confused and frustrated population easily influenced by superstition and phony baloney promises. We were absolutely ecstatic when suddenly the airwaves exploded with information on working with The Law of Attraction. Suddenly it seemed that we were able to be spiritual and wealthy and that we now had a formula to work with to get this balance happening.
Working with the Law of Attractionis a philosophy that calms us into believing that we can attract our heart’s desire to us without having to take part in the ruthless, detached world of high commerce. We are, after all, concerned with other things – like world peace! We want everyone to experience happiness, harmony, bliss, and inner peace. We spiritually minded individuals are gentle souls, trusting and loving. The hype with the Law is that everyone is deserving of everything they envision for themselves; plus we are ‘one’, therefore none are more, or less, deserving than others; we are equal.
It’s taught that all we have to do is state clearly what we want in our lives and keep our focus on it. I’ve also recently read that it is recommended to only ask once otherwise you are really expressing doubt in your deservingness and thereby jeopardize the whole process. Yikes!
It appeals to us that we might be able to affect our wealth without actually having to change anything except our thoughts. But let’s cut the crap! Do you really understand that you have to change your thoughts? Not just add happy new thoughts to the cacophony of thoughts already spinning in your head. Do you get that if you are currently experiencing lack you have seriously bad thinking patterns that keep you from experiencing that flow of abundance of all the good stuff? You may be locked in to an abundant mediocre flow, a nice safe river of little risk and moderate abundance, trying to wish your way to happiness. “I think I can, I think I can…” becomes the unspoken mantra. There are things you need to understand to become a powerful co-creator of Universal Abundance.
Let’s start with understanding energy.
Everything is energy; that is to say that all things on this earth are made up of molecules vibrating at specific frequencies creating electro-magnetic energy. This is not the same as spiritual energy, or life force energy, or chi, or ki, or mana, or prana - you get the picture.
A chair has energy, a very low dense energy with no vital life force. A rock or a crystal has a higher frequency of energy, and while they can hold and amplify energy they have no life force energy and no creative energy. A tree or plant has an energy system that is of a higher frequency than a chair as well. It does have a life force and as such a level of consciousness – but it has no mind. An animal has an active life force, has a mind capable of making choices, and therefore has a higher, much more active level of consciousness. Now the human being, wonder of all sentient beings, has a highly evolved energy system, is acutely sensitive to all other expressions of energy around him, has a complex mind and reasoning ability and therefore – obviously – is the most highly evolved species on this planet. Or at least should be. Unfortunately, we often sure don’t act like it. We must also understand that there are laws that govern the movement of energy and furthermore that since they are laws we are subject to work within them. We can’t just pick and choose, where, when, why and how we want to participate. They govern.

Now, let’s move on to The Law of Attraction:
Understand this – the Law of Attraction is a Law – like the Law of Gravity or the Law of Thermodynamics. It is one of the functioning laws of our dualistic universe. The Law of Attraction is simple: Like attracts like. That’s it. It is omnipotent and omnipresent. It is never not active. The Law of Attraction will not be manipulated and it does not respond to what you want – it is a dynamic force that reflects what you are. All that you see happening in your life today is the Law in action; the outer manifestation of your life is exactly resonant with your energy system which is manifested between all the layers of your being; your thoughts – all of them, not just the ones you like, your feelings – again all of them, and your actions – or lack of. If you want to change what you get in your life - you have to change how you think, feel and behave. Wishful thinking doesn’t cut it. Vision boards and goalsetting don’t do it either. You have to be the change you want. The Law is purely determined by negative, positive and neutral charges. Everything in our world is either being attracted or repulsed or in a state of inertia. You determine the charges and the direction of flow. Like attracts like. The ‘Law’ doesn’t think, it doesn’t determine worthiness, and it doesn’t care about you. It just is! Like attracts like.

Let’s move on one more step to understanding some fundamental things about money.
Money is not a reward. Money does not reflect worthiness. Money does not reflect value. Money does not reflect character. Money is not an exchange of energy.Money doesn’t have energy. If you hide a stack of billsunder your floor boards for a 150 years it will still be there when you come back in your next life to get it – if it hasn’t rotted that is! It has no innate power. If you believe that good behavior is rewarded financially, that having money will tell the world how much you are worth as a person, that wealthy people have more value or are of strong character, you will suffer. Money (currency) was created to measure the value of an exchange of goods and services. That doesn’t imply anything about fairness, equality, or balance! Money has numerical value; not ethical, not moral, and not spiritual value! We evolved human beings assign the value and intrinsic worth to our exchanges of assets. Money – having it or not having it strictly reflects your belief in profit and your choices in dealing with that profit. You don’t cosmically deserve or un-deserve money either. Many people around the world are putting in back breaking hours of work every day and are well under assessed poverty lines.Lots of good, honest, hardworking creative men and women are barely getting by. You will have money proportionate to what you really, truly believe you deserve and what youreally, truly believe you need it for, i.e. paying bills and getting by – (most people), trips, fancy cars, toys, entertainment, education, savings, growth, etc. Whatever means the most to you will be supported – and I don’t mean what you want in your happy place. And if you think you can’t or won’t be supportedyou won’t be! Simple math! Our personal affluence is determined by the belief we have around having more than what’s neededto survive in the present moment! Our financial worth is also determined by our true belief around being wealthy or poverty stricken, of deserving financial ease, of being able to handle it. Our internal rivers of fear and doubt run deep and provide sustenance to every thought we have around living abundantly.

So How Do We Do This Then?
If you are trying to change your fortune, and most people are, you’ve gotto do an entire overhaul of your value and belief system. All of you, all your little wobbly bits, have to all be going in the same direction. Consider that each and every thought you have, every emotion, and every action comprise a ‘You’ that is a team. All the team players have to be headed for the same goal if the body wants to get there. And if some part doesn’t agree then the rest of the team must be strong enough in their conviction to carry the weaker pieces.
Working with the Law of Attraction is really a case of embodiment. Your heart and mind work in concert to create the life you currently have with all factors considered. All happiness, self worth, self-esteem and bliss start in your soul’s centre of being. If you think money is going to bring you these things you are wrong. Nothing outside of you will ever change what is inside you. A designer suit hanging on your outside won’t convince an inner soul dressed in rags that you are suddenly rich! Life will only validate what you believe in your heart center. However, discovering true joy and worthiness, self respect and compassion within your own core will bring you to many opportunities of wealth and abundance and many will involve money! Financial abundance and prosperity will often follow a spiritual awakening when body, mind and soul are harmoniously participating to create a life well lived.

If you ever want to realize financial success there are 2 ways to do it i) chase the money and do what ever you have to do to get it and keep it, with all your issues fully intact. Don’t even think of ever opening that soul-searching can of spiritual worms! After you’ve made the cash you can spend it anyway you want; blow it in a bar or feed a starving village. It’s your choice! Or ii) learn to shift your frame of thinking towards believing in being abundant. Spiritual abundance does not necessarily extend to our bank account balances. Start building self worth, love and compassion and you will be abundantly rewarded. Many poor, poor people live richly abundant lives, grounded in purpose, heart and mind. They get it. Many well off successful people feel a deep pervasive emptiness that threatens their very existence. The difference lies in how rich the soul feels it is. An impoverished soul will never comprehend what it means to be abundant and will never be able to sustain material wealth. An abundant soul will never see itself as poor!
But whatever you do don’t fool yourself into thinking that just because you have a pure heart and are spiritually aware and do a ton of good work that you deserve to be sustained and provided for in riches by an abundant Universe. It just doesn’t work that way! More articles by Andrea Connell
