October 6, 2010 - For many years now I’ve consciously, actively been on my spiritual journey. It’s been a twisty, curvy kind of off road track, meandering here and there, sloughing it up hills, careening out of control down hills. All of it allowing me the opportunity to investigate, explore and face the challenges of taking the road less traveled. Some of it has been difficult, some of it lonely, some of it terrifying but all of it rewarding. Looking back I see the distractions and the superfluous pieces that I couldn’t see at the time. Turns out that everything wasn’t important after all. Some of it was just avoidance some of it just drama to occupy an idle mind.
I like to think that along the way I developed some wisdom but honestly I think it boils down to that I just started choosing what was right for me. Somewhere along the line I stopped worrying about having to know it all and gave up trying to piece it all together. I also stopped trying to find the best path or the one true path and instead I began believing in just knowing me and honoring myself and my spiritual needs. I noticed that I began to feel really grounded, stable and centered. I had finally come to the place where my spiritual rubber met my road. I knew where I was at and where I was going and why I needed to get there.

Choosing the Right Trip Package
Each of us is on our own unique trip in this lifetime. It is our right to determine for ourselves how we want to spend our time, resources and energy, how we interact, how we make ourselves heard, known and understood. In this way we find out what makes us tick and where we want to focus our energy, most importantly with regards to our personal spiritual paths. It is easy however, to be influenced out of your own ‘right’ mind by people who love you or by people we admire for the success they experience in their own lives created by their own choices. We live in a western culture where the role of spiritual guru/advisor is virtually obsolete. Where for previous generations the role was usually held by a priest or another religious figure, today we find ourselves easily influenced by any number of people through books, media, movies, and even the internet.
My spiritual quest, like for many others, has been hugely accelerated by the information so readily available on the Internet. Cyber space is filled with a staggering volume of material and teachers. It can be a daunting task to sift through it all with a degree of personal clarity and self-appreciation. Many people have strong opinions which they are very eager to share, some people pass along other people's opinions, some people just want to talk and are barely aware of what they are saying. It’s all done to influence others. Spiritual growth is on a global fast track and if you are not careful you run the risk of being swept along in a current of thought and belief that does not reflect your truest best interest. In a world that teaches non-judgment, compassion, tolerance and equality it can be a challenging task to actually critically decipher what is best for you and what isn’t. Come to understand how you learn, what you need to learn, and also what you already truly know in the core of your being. Never let someone else’s truth over-ride your own. We all have our own learning curve and our own pace. Determine and then respect yours.

Choosing the Spiritual Vehicle of Your Expression
Engaging with a spiritual path is kind of like buying a car. Hundreds of makes and models available, all different styles, all different purposes, one more suitable to your particular lifestyle than all the others but how do you find which one is truly the right one.
Some you can cross off the list right from the start based on your personal tastes. Don't even entertain the idea of one unless it puts a smile on your face and makes your heart beat just a little faster. Then you decide what your main function for the vehicle is; everyday convenience, getting there quickly, toting your life along with you, agility and quick stops, starts and turns or comfort for the long haul. Then comes the fun part...the test drives. Try them out... all of them...everything that tickles your fancy. In the end the winner will be the one that matches your purpose the best. And therein lies the conundrum...what's the purpose? Which part of you are you trying to put in the driver's seat? Is it the over taxed, exhausted aspect that wants a little simple happiness, the caregiver looking for a happy compromise for everyone's sake, or maybe the renegade that's longing to jump into a new adventure searching for the holy grail? Or are you looking for tried and true, reliability and common sense? Just choose. We can always trade in vehicles as we change and grow. There is a spiritual discipline for everyone. Be specific. Don’t judge yourself. Accept your needs and wants. You don’t need to drive the same car as your best friend – don’t feel you need to navigate life by the same spiritual path.

Every Journey Has a Special Fuel
Are you still looking for the one truth? Good luck; many people - many roads; many paths - many motivations. Truth is determined, understood and witnessed by what works for people. So be more specific - ask yourself the questions you need satisfied in your life. Here are some questions to ponder:
- Are you trying to ease a suffering mind, poor health, lack of wealth, diminished quality of life, or find meaning?
-Are you trying to manifest your life in greater consciousness and awareness?
- Are you wanting/trying to find/reach a state of enlightenment?
- Are you searching/longing to discover your purpose and spiritual power?
- Are you searching for peace, love, forgiveness, compassion, etc?
- Are you trying to find a discipline that you can sink your teeth into, follow along with, belong to, grow with?
- Are you looking to experience God with or without church and religion?
- Are you compelled to learn in order to lead?
The questions are endless that can help you try to get a handle of who you are and what you really need. Knowing what you want fuels your spiritual path and keeps you moving. Understand that a spiritual path has no ending, no right way, and no wrong way. You can go as far as you want to go, you can rest anywhere you want. There are answers and solutions at every step. It is a very stretchy, tug and pull, grow and expand, accept and resist kind of game, where no one wins. You just have to choose the trip you want to take, find which jalopy suits you best to get you where you want to go, and keep giving it the right fuel. It's just an experience! A drive to satisfy the heart - your soul’s heart! Where does your spiritual rubber meet the road?
